Audience Research!

10 people participated in the audience research both males and females. My group has asked them the 6 questions we had planned earlier and that I wrote in one of the previous posts. The purpose of it was to discover what would appeal to the different audience of both teens and adults. All of the participants like the thriller/horror genre and they all have different films they like in that genre, whether it is "The Hills Have Eyes" because of the cannibals or "Insidious" because of the demon. These films scare the audience, keep them on edge and give them the adrenaline rush, which is why they like to go see them. The audience expects that these films will make them jump, scare them and show them something different that they can't get from other genres of films. Most of the audience agreed that the sound is the most important feature as this is what is actually used to scare the viewers and horror/thrillers would be not scary or as thrilling without it. However editing and cinematography were also mentioned as the type of shots and the way they are put together are also important factors to think about in order to achieve shocking, puzzling and terrifying the audience. In terms of the opening sequence that my group is planning to make, the audience gave us a positive feedback, as they thought that the combination of something unconventional, murder and mystery is something that is not often done and would work well together. This audience research gave me a better understanding of what audience like and want to see and I think it will help to make the opening sequence that my group is making more interesting, effective, popular and of-course more scary and thrilling, which is the aim!

Preliminary Task-Elina Davies, Irena Toneva, Martins Ibeh!

This preliminary task will not get my group or me any marks for our project, however in my opinion it was still very important for us, so we could  get the feel of what it will be like when it comes to actual filming and editing our opening sequence. The task was to have a small scene of someone opening the door, going into a room and having a dialogue with another person; but also to follow the 180 degree rule, have match on action and have an over the shoulder shot. It seemed like a very easy task, but it took my group a while to complete it, as we faced a lot of technical issues. We had to re-film the video a lot of times, as either the sound would be set too low or the brightness would be wrong. After several unsuccessful attempts, we changed cameras and were finally able to capture a decent video. Then we transferred it from the tape to a MAC computer, to an editing programme Final Cut Pro. I had experience using this programme and editing projects in the past, so it took us about 15-20 minutes to edit the different shots from the video to make it into a small scene. I can say that our group did not struggle with the aims of the preliminary task, I think that we were fairly successful with them and if it was not for the technical issues we would have finished it much quicker. I was glad that we had this task, as it helped to remember and feel what it is like to film and edit, which will definitely help me and my group when we do our opening sequence.

FADE IN
INT. LIBRARY –DAY

A late teen/adult boy James walks through the library towards the tables. On one of the empty tables there is a pair of earphones. James picks up the earphones and put them into his ears. James realises he can hear what people are thinking. A student girl in a short skirt and a tight top walks past James.

GIRL (NARRATIVE OF THOUGHTS)
Wow He’s Hot!

A nerdy looking student guy with books in his hands runs past James.

GUY (NARRATIVE OF THOUGHTS)
I’m so late, I’m so late, I’m so late!

James looks to the corner of the room and there is an innocent girl in a pink dress Eris sitting behind a table. She sitting sideways and her hair is down covering her face. Eris is reading a book. Eris looks up and her eyes and lips are covered with black make up.

ERIS (NARRATIVE OF THOUGHTS)
DIE!

James closes his eyes and opens them, then looks to where Eris was sitting. There is no one there. The earphones are gone from his ears as well. James’s friend Tony walks towards him.

TONY
What’s up man? You look like you just saw a ghost!

JAMES
Just some girl with black make up, she was just here and now she’s gone and I think she wanted me to die!

TONY
I think you either done too much studying, which I doubt or too much drinking last night, which is more likely! So go home and get some sleep, before you see even more weird girls who are trying to get you killed LOL!

James and Tony slap each others hands and James quickly walks towards the door and out of the library. As he shuts the door behind him he looks up and the corridor is empty, except for Eris who is standing infront of him. Eris puts earphones around James’s neck and starts strangling him. Cut to the black screen with title of the film „In Your Mind.”
